Thompson's Bay
A sheltered cove between Ballito and Shaka's Rock, with a huge tidal pool and a rock arch locals call the Hole in the Wall.
Charlie's Pool
The tidal pool at Thompson's Bay, known locally as Charlie's Pool, is roughly Olympic-sized and was built by a local resident so he could train in the sea. Today it is one of the best places on the coast to swim laps or snorkel in calm water.
Look out for parrotfish, trumpetfish and other reef fish, and branching coral along the walls.
The Hole in the Wall
Just past the pool, a natural arch through the rocks frames the sea. It is a favourite photo spot and a good place to watch for dolphins and, in season, whales. Explore it at low tide and keep off the rocks when the sea is big.
The beach
The beach has seasonal lifeguards and shark nets, and the sand and rock ledges make it a good family beach. From here you can walk south along the shore to Ballito or north to Shaka's Rock.
Good to know
Wear something on your feet or watch where you stand: there can be sea urchins in the pool.
Please leave the fish and coral where they are. Collecting or catching anything in the tidal pools damages them for everyone.
Parking can be paid in the holiday season.
