Things to do in Ballito
The heart of the Dolphin Coast: warm sea, tidal pools, a beachfront promenade and dolphins beyond the backline.
Thompson’s Bay and the tidal pools
Thompson’s Bay is a sheltered little bay with a tidal pool for safe swimming. From here you can walk along the rocks towards Shaka’s Rock at low tide.
Ballito has several tidal pools along the shore, which are ideal for children and easy swimming. At low tide the rock pools either side are full of fish, crabs and anemones.
Walk or run the promenade
A paved promenade runs along the shore past the main beach. It’s best at sunrise, when the light comes straight off the sea and dolphins are often seen beyond the backline.
Surfing
Ballito’s point and beach breaks work much of the year, and the town hosts the Ballito Pro surf contest. Surf schools offer lessons for beginners, and board hire is easy to find.
Dolphins, whales and the sardine run
The Dolphin Coast gets its name honestly: bottlenose dolphins are seen year round. Humpback whales pass from about June to November, and in some winters the sardine run brings feeding birds, dolphins and sharks close inshore. See our Ballito wildlife guide.
Salt Rock, Shaka’s Rock and Zimbali
A few minutes north, Salt Rock and Shaka’s Rock have quieter beaches, rock ledges and tidal pools. Zimbali to the south has a coastal forest estate and golf, and Sheffield Beach and Umhlali are close by.
Scenic flights and other activities
See the coast from the air on a microlight flight, play golf at one of the estates, or head inland for farm stalls and the sugarcane hills. On rainy days Ballito’s shopping centres have plenty of restaurants and shops.
Eat and drink
Ballito has one of the biggest choices of restaurants on the North Coast, from beachfront cafes and seafood to sushi, pizza and craft beer. Book ahead for dinner in December and over long weekends.
