Ballito Promenade and the walk to Salt Rock
An easy beachfront promenade, and a longer coastal trail past tidal pools and cliffs all the way to Salt Rock.
The promenade
Ballito's paved promenade runs for about 2.5 km along the shore between Willard Beach and Salmon Bay. It is flat and easy, with cafes along the way, and it is busiest early in the morning with walkers, runners and dogs.
Go at sunrise: the light comes straight off the sea and dolphins are often seen beyond the backline.
The coastal walk to Salt Rock
For a longer outing, head north from Willard Beach along the shore. The route passes tidal pools, crosses beaches and rock ledges, goes through the Hole in the Wall near Thompson's Bay and climbs over the cliffs at Shaka's Rock, then follows Umhlali Beach to Salt Rock.
It is about 5 km one way and takes just over an hour at an easy pace. Walk it at low tide, as some rocky sections are hard to pass when the tide is high, and arrange a lift back or plan for the return walk.
Good to know
Take water, sun protection and shoes you don't mind getting wet.
Walk in daylight and in company, especially on the quieter stretches north of Thompson's Bay.
